March 30, 1945 Gentlemen: Re: Carbohydrate substrates for Dr. Joshua Lederberg, Genetics In October 1947 Dr. Lederberg came to see me for glycoside substrates for his work. I told him that he could not only have any preparations that we had at hand, but that I would be glad to have amy laboratory prepare those that he could not obtain elsewhere. I had a session with Messrs. Brink and Irwin on this shortly thereafter. I did not regard it advisable to ask for funds to support this work via a separate grant in October. I told Lederberg, Irwin and Brink that I would go as far as possible on funds already allocated for sugar work, RF 47:270, and any others that could add a dollar here or there. Since January 1, I have had Dr. Saul Roseman spend a substantial part of his time for this work--and since about February 9 Mr. Martin Seidman has also helped. The purpose of this memo is to ask the Research Committee for $500 to buy chemicals and supplies for this project--which you can debit under or over my name. Respectfully yours, Karl Paul Link
