This le in reply to your enquiry of October 15, concerning Branch
Howe. Howe is showing excellent promise in his scholastic and research
work, but is expected to complete hie studies here in 1954. If your
department's appointment is still vacant for 1954, I will be very happy
to give you a fuller appraiaal of him.

I cannot think of anyoother student in the department who is ready
to leave next year, and who cualifiea in genetics, microblology and plant
anatomy, all at once. I will ask at our Botany Department, where there
might be someone.

The combination of disciplines you are asking for recalls the pro~
gram at the Osborm Botanical Laboratory, where I studied for the Doctorate
at Yale University. If you have not already done so, it might be produc-
tive to write to Dr. De Me Bonner or Tf. Re Burkholder.
