CHEMICAL CORPS BIOLOGICAL LABORATORIES VM DIVISION Camp Detrick, Frederick, Maryland 2 May 1953 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics University of Wisconsin Madison 6, Wisconsin Dear Dr. Lederberg: This is in reply to your letter of 27 April. Dr. Ethel McNeil, Department of Pathology & Hygiene, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois, has the stock cultures of Salmonella including the pullorum and gallinarum strains which we had at the University of California. If there are any of the variants available to which you refer in your letter of 27 April, I am sure she would be glad to send them to you. I am sending your letter on to her for reply. I am enclosing a copy of the reprint which you requested. Recently I had the opportunity to visit with Dr. Kauffmann at the Copenhagen laboratory. At the time of my visit he was busily engaged in studies with some of your variant strains and is very enthusiastic about the work which you are doing along this line. I am sure that you have learned that he has been able to confirm the findings of yourself and Edwards that these have remained as you originally described. I expect to be at the University of Wisconsin sometime in the near future and will drop in and discuss what I learned from him at that time. Best wishes—~ Sincerely yours, Mjileiun BR Peinobvonr WRH/alh WILLIAM R. HINSHAW Chief, VM Division Incl Gml C Biological Laboratories
