Lederberg Dept. of Genetics University of Wisconsin Madison 6, Wisconsin Dear Dr, Lederberg: For my address to the Society of American Bacteriologists in May, as well as for a long range study, I am ennsidering the topic of "What is Proper Training for Bacteriologists." In connection with this, I am most anxious to obtain information about the formal training of a number of microbiologists that have made notable contributions and, if possible, their ideas as to the kind and extent of training they consider necessary now for future workers in the field. This letter is being sent to a substantial, selected, group with tne hope that the information obtained will be useful in formulating general conclusions. To make your task simpler, I am enclosing a brief questionnaire, Your answers to these questions will be greatly appreciated and I will be very grateful for any general comments you may wish to make, It is understocd, of course, that I shall not make reference to any names in any statement I may utter or publish, Sincerely yours, DOW He O.
