April 25. 53 Dear Dr. Lederberg: I read recently your penetrating analysis of cytoplasmic heredity. As usual among weak humans, I liked best the parts which my own thinking led me in similar directions. I was specially pleased that you, as probably the only US geneticist, are aware of the great theoretical importance of my friend and former student Buchner's work on symbionts generally unknown also among zoologists. Thus, you will be interested to hear that his and I think very good book is in press and will be published any day. Buchner wrote me recently an amazing fact he is studying now. He has a coccid (supposed to be male heterogametic) in which half of the eggs receive symbionts (before fertilization!) and half not. The former develop into females and the latter into males and the males [END PAGE ONE] [BEGIN PAGE TWO] have a rudimentary mouth and cannot eat. I wonder how the details will come out! Best regards Yours sincerely, Richard Goldschimdt My regards to Huskins!
