Lonc IsLAND BIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION COLD SPRING HARBOR, LONG ISLAND THE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY September 16, 1954 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics College of Agriculture The University of Wisconsin Madison 6, Wisconsin Dear Josh: Sorry for the delay but I have been in transit, having arrived at Cold Spring Harbor a little over a week ago. This is a “permanent change”. In any case, I will probably be here for at least a year. This automatically, of courses, prevents me from working with virulent Pasteurella pestis. If time permits I intend to look for evidence for recombination in P, pestis employing the growth factor requirements, rhamnose utilization, and phage resistance as markers. I would be glad to communicate with Devignat when I get into this phase of the work. I will be devoting most of my time (when facilities become available) to a reexamination of mutations to itaconate and mesaconate utilization in Pseudomonas fluorescens and the effect of such mutations on the ability of the cells to oxidize TCA cycle compounds. This will be a repeat of some of the work performed several years ago, which you ars familiar with. This time, however, I will be working at the enzyme level and hope to clear up the problem. Do you happen to have Stanier's strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens A 3.7? If so, I would appreciate a transplant. Now that I am on the East Coast I hope 1 will be able to ses you when you are in the neighborhood. Sincerely yours, “The: Ellis Englesberg
