April 20, 1950. Dear Mr. Machaver: Mr. Herbert Dorfman was not actually a student in any of my classes, and I know him only as a general assistant and dishwasher in my laboratory, which is primarily concerned with bacteriological research. However, what knowledge I have of him is quite commendable. I found him to be a careful worker, quite diligent- even eager for work. He seems to be intelligent and very affable. He was rapidly developing competence in bacteriological techniques. I am sorry not to be able to tell you of his academic qualifications but I simply have no knowledge of them. In every other respect, however, I am pleased to recommend him without reservation. Yours sincerely, Joshua Lederberg Assistant Professor of Genetics
