CLARK. M.D. GENERAL DIRECTOR December 11, 1952 Dr, Joshua Lederberg University of Wisconsin Madison, Wisconsin Dear Dr. Lederberg: I am forwarding the Salmonella L strain which is now growing fairly well on 10% horse serum agar. We are adding 1% gelatin to the media but I do not know whether it really helps. The cultures are on one side of the agar squares and you should streak them on fresh plates and leave the squares on the plates, Growth often starts only under the agar squares. This is a 3A culture which does not revert to the bacillary form, You can get 3B L forms without difficulty from the Salmonella if you inoculate nutrient agar, containing penicillin, heavily and make pour plates. These cultures can be -propogated only in pour plates. The culture which you obtained from strain 52 is also of the 3B type. If you transfer it on nutrient agar with horse serum and penicillin you can get the 3A, I will make some experiments with your W-1637 when it arrives. It is probably in the Christmans mail, I am very much interested to know whether you have any success with. the Salmonella L. I hope you will keep me informed. With kind regards, w/ Sincerely yours, ogres iets
