Dear Dr. Demerec:

Thank you for your letter of the 5th.

I was aware of the bulk of your material, and I am also sensitive
of the inconvenience to you in assembling and shipping large numbers
of cultures. It was for this reason that I had suggested the expedient
of using lysates or even mixtures of lysates.

Since we are simply trying to screen for loci that might be linked
with H, or H,, it would be inefficient to test more than onegsatisfactory
matant <akkm from each group of alleles or pseudoalleles. 3o one represen-
tative of each"group"(of one or more known alleles) would be quite sufficient.

It was gracious and generous of you to offer to send so mang different
mitant cultures. We would be happy to have the bacterial strains, but for

our immediate requiremnts, the lysates would also suffice. Please proceed
according to your own convenience.

Mr. Iino is arrdving next week and will be ready to start work by the
end of the month. I will, of course, let you know the outcome.
