STANFORD UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER STANFORD, CALIFORNIA 94305 © (415) 821-1200 STANFORD UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE Department of Genetics The International Cystic Fibrosis Association has asked me to organize a series of free form conferences on fundamental issues of genetic disease. A central purpose is to facilitate the process (as well as augment the substance) of communications between molecular biological expertise and clinical imperatives. The long term plan for these conferences is not yet clear to me although they may follow a similar pattern with the annual recruitment of some additional specialists in particular fields. At any rate, the first of these is scheduled to be held at the Weizmann Institute at Rehovot, Israel, from the evening of July 1 to the early afternoon of July 4, 1972. Your participation will require no form-l preparation on your part. I can assure you that the program will include a number of people with whom you should enjoy matching wits. Jerry Gross of Massachusetts General Hospital, Bill Rutter of San Francisco, and Saul Roseman of Johns Hopkins are already part of an informal organizing group trying to get this underway. We will have about two dozen people altogether, and the setting will resemble that of the Ciba conferences. If anything we will be still more informal: a few pieces will be designed to get the conversation moving. We plan at first to publish the proceeding mainly in the form of an informal reportage, but want to consult the participants before making further plans. The conferences will be by no means narrowly confined to Cystic Fibrosis: The foundation people are very well imbued with the importance of supporting the most basic lines of research if we are ever to get effective solutions to particular problems. The financial arrangements will of course include your personal travel and living expenses (economy air fare basis)* I hope that your schedule and your inclinations coincide to make it possible for you to attend. May I hear from you soon that you can? Yours sincerely, Joshua Lederberg Professor of Genetics *in addition to an honorarium of $500. LT. J. P. KENNEDY, JR.
