Department of Micrabiolagy Medal Center Morcartowr, West Virginta 26306 January 28, 1985 West Virginia University Dr. Josh Lederberg 1230 York Avenue New York, NY 10021-6399 Dear Dr. Lederberg, Thank you for your note and your interest in our article on E. coli hemolysins. I must apologize for not being aware of your observations on the hemolytic effect of E. coli lysates and the work by Schiff and Bornstein on typhoid cultures. Lysis by osmotic shock or sonication does release an intracellular form of hemolysin and a form bound to cell membranes (B-eor cell bound hemolysin). These hemolysins appear to be precursors of the ยป or extra- cellular hemolysin. We have a monoclonal antibody to the hemolysin which could identify the mechanism of lysis. Respectfully, > \ ~. steams oa Irvin 5. Snyder, Ph.p, Professor & Chairman ISS/tm \ V
