Howard Florey Professor Post Office Box 334, Canberra City 2601 of Medical Research Telegrams CURTMED Canberra Telephone 062 49 2597 8 August, 1985. Dr. Joshua Lederberg, President, The Rockefeller University, New York NY 10021, U.S.A. Dear Dr. Lederberg, Thank you for your comments on Biochemistry in this School. I do appreciate the fact that you have drawn our attention to some key issues and have emphasised for us the importance of these. We are addressing the question of genetics. We have three reports now which emphasize the need for further development of DNA and protein research. We have (in July) disestablished the Department of Physical Chemistry and can now approach the review of Biochemistry as a single discipline. My own writings for purposes of seeking government funding have also drawn attention to the requirements for research in parasitology and toxicology. So our Committee, which will meet in September, will start to grapple with some of the issues to which you have drawn our attention. I am most grateful to you for your advice. "abd R. Porter. c.c.
