R. Porter [stamped, JUL 30 1985] Biochemistry at ANU These comments are almost unisponsibly [?] remote [?]; but I try to respond to yours of 9 July. The general directions and recent leadership of the department are commendable, not beyond the possibility of still higher aspirations. It is impossible to put too much emphasis in DNA and protein structure, and their variations qua genetic polymorphism and disease. All the more as you do not have Genetics as a separate program. I do note the MMBU. On the other hand you might reexamine the logic of a separate Physical Biochemistry department (I do not ignore a logic of opportunity for special leadership -- [END PAGE ONE] [BEGIN PAGE TWO] [heading, John Custm [?] School] provide the premise is sustained.) At this distance, perhaps I've already spoken beyond my credentials. Sincerely, Josh Lederberg P.S. Where is parasitology? toxicology? RoP '81
