THE PEW CHARITABLE TRUSTS Suite 501 Rebecca W. Rimel Three Parkway Executive Director Philadelphia 215.587.4040 Pennsylvania 19102.1305 February 9, 1990 Mr. Joshua Lederberg President The Rockefeller University 1230 York Avenue New York, NY 10021 Dear Josh: Thank you so much for your recent note and the wonderful article from The Washington Post. Clearly the concerns that you raised in your column have been realized and, unless we are able to develop some "global bargains" to preserve our environment, we all will suffer the overwhelming consequences. As you know, The Pew Charitable Trusts has a growing interest in the area of conservation, and I am delighted that we have recently appointed a new director to guide our grantmaking in this area. Joshua Reichert has extensive experience both domestically and internationally and has worked in the areas of public policy, international development, as well as conservation and the environment. I have taken the liberty of sharing your colunmm with him as I know that he will enjoy your reflections on what certainly will be the greatest challenge facing us in the next decade. I am sorry that we did not have more of a chance to catch-up during my recent visit to Rockefeller; * ‘however, I trust that there will be lots of time for us to talk about our current projects and future opportunities during the Pew Scholars meeting in March. Thanks again for your continued good guidance, friendship and support. Sincerely, wv Rebecca W. Rimel RWR/ smw cc: Joshua S. Reichert The Pew Memorial Trust The Medical Trust A division of The J.
