Sch., Stanford, Calif, 93405. Dear Dr. Lederberg., Recently, the study on the relationship of the chemical structure of bacterial lipopolysaccharide to its biological functions has been initiated in our laboratory using a mild strain of E. Coli. However, the mutants lacking various constituents in the LPS structure are necessary for the fully successful investigation. Would you send me galactose negative mutants of E. coli, and mutants defective in heptose in addition to hexose, if available? Thank you in advance, Yours sincerely, Yukio Bito [written in Lederberg's handwriting, W2375 gal4 lp plus W2374 gal2-lp plus W3298 (from Jacob)number P699 gal-Sr galb W3925 gal- (t) ust Hfr W2236 gal3-lac-lp25 W2358 lambda5 gal1minus]
