RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR NUCLEAR MEDICINE AND BIOLOGY HIROSHIMA UNIVERSITY KASUMI-CHO, HIROSHIMA, JAPAN April 4, 1969 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics School of Medicine Stanford University Palo Alto, California 94304 U.S. A. Dear Sirs: I hav¢ been looking for streptomycin-resistant mutants of Escherichia coli K12, which have altered ribosomal components. I got the streptomycin-resistant strain W3637 from Dr. Hino of Hiroshima University, who had got it from Dr. Y. Hirota. And this strain seems to have some alteration compared to non- resistant Kl2 strain on carboxy-methyl-cellulose column chromatography of ribosomal proteins. I want to know how, from what strain and by whom this W3637 strain was derived. I would be very glad if you give me informations about these things or about reference paper published, and send me the original strain of W3637, which has not streptomycin- resistant mutation.
