" ae STANFORD UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER \a STANFORD, CALIFORNIA 94305 « (415) 321-1200 May 1, 1973 Sranrorp University SCHOOL OF MEDICINE Department of Genetics Dr. Richard Ries Regional Manager European and American Section National Science Foundation Washington, D.C. 20550 Dear Dr. Ries, I am enclosing now a formal, summary of the projects and budgetary allocations to programs that are fairly attributal to the Stanford contribution to the Stanford/Pavia exchange program in genetics and molecular biology. You will note that the total contribution for calendar year 1973 is estimated to total $86,750 from this side. This is, I believe, a fair match to the support that Professor Ciferri at Pavia will be receiving from his Italian counterpart. May I ask you, however, about the feasibility of funding at a level of between $5,000 and $10,000 for the special costs of maintaining visitors from Pavia and sending some of our people over there over and above the actual operational expenses of the research in which they would be involved. We understand that routine research expenses and salaries for long-term visitors are to be subsumed under our regular research projects grants. However, it is difficult to justify the shorter visits entirely within the framework of the research per se and, especially in the light of the very restrictive funding climate for research projects during the current year I am bound to ask you for help for these extraordinary expenses within the framework and the concept of the exchange program. Please advise about the most appropriate timing and format of applications toward that end. Sincerely yours, oshua Lederberg Professor of Genetics JL/rr Enclosure LT. J. P. KENNEDY, JR.
