STANFORD UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER STANFORD, CALIFORNIA 94305 ยข (415) 321-1200 SranrorD UNIversIry SCHOOL OF MEDICINE Department of Genetics 27 March 1972 Dr. Herman Lewis National Science Foundation Ref: GB 29094 Washington, D. C. 20550 Pavia/Stanford Exchange Dear Herman: With this letter is the application for renewal of the subject grant. Professor Cavalli-Sforza is, of course, playing a central role in maintaining this program; but, I should also say that it is an in- dispensable part of the intellectual life of my own laboratory. The chance to have people like Orio Ciferri and Vittorio Sgaramella has greatly enriched our research programs in molecular biology, and I hope they are also carrying a great deal back with them to Italy. The vitality of these exchanges -~ and their counterparts from our side (who do happen to be mostly younger) ~- speaks to the great success of the program as a-functioning exchange of scientific insight, as well as for its sponsorship of research that would be entirely defensible on its independent scientific merits. The explicit recognition of the know- ledge-sharing purposes of the grant is certainly very heipfui to me as its administrator. Needless to say, we are very eager to have the opportunity to con- tinue this program as an inter-departmental, broad-based exchange, and hope that its further funding will meet with the Foundation's appreval.
