May 29, 1958. Dr. Avram Goldstein Department of Pharmacology Stanford University Stanford, California Dear Avram: I received your letter of May 27 and talked today with Joshua, and also with Lymen Stowe. I am delighted that the ar- rengements are going so well and we here are eager to do what we can. We are prepared to turn over to Joshua the 2 modules (22 x 22 ft.) at the southwest corner of our department, eat present designated as a student-fellow lab. and as a staff lab. It is my understancing fron talking with Lyman that the “unassigned laboratory" in the north wing that adjoins the Infectious Diseases Unit wili be immediately assigned to Biochemistry end furnished for us as a staff lab. Our present commitwents for staff people make it essential that we re- tain the number of steff laboratories for which we planned. We will limit the graduate student and post-doctoral fellow census to the space available, with the expectation that this is a temporary errangement until Blank Building is completed. At that time - presumably about 3-4 years after we move into Edwards - we expect that with the growth of the department ad- ditional space will be luperative, and that the entire third floor would be available to us. I believe that biochemistry facilities such as cold roons, autoclaves, dish washers, distilled water, etc., can be made avail- able to Joshua and the details can be satisfactorily adjusted directly with him. On the basis of our conversation this morning, I feel that a formal offer including the proposals contained in your letter and mine would meet with his acceptance. Forgive the formality of this letter. Sylvy, the children and I plan to spend the ear’, part of July in Palo Alto house hunt- ing. We've wondered whether che Steere house is still available. As ever, AK/MoK. Arthur Kornberg. cC- Dr. Robert Alway Dr. Joshua Lederber::
