Monday morning Dec 10, 1956 Dear Dave: Special delivery isn't what it used to be-- anyhow I just received your letter. It was really heartwarming to hear from you in these terms-—- I really do appreciate your having written in that way. Certainly one of the attrac- tive features of Stanford would be the strength and congenfality of our association. I hope this doesn't sound paradoxical, but the main thing we might still miss there would be Fd himself. We've been very much upset by maagre news of his personal difficulties;w&'hope he'll be as happy in New York as we are sues he was for a long time at Stanford. I would, by the way, like to get in touch with Ed to dieouss this with him. I gather he's not in Palo Alto-- do you know where is is these weeks? Of course I want to have a tete-a—tebeewith you, and am planning to fly out at an early date -- I'm enly waiting to hear from Twitty when would be most convenient for the department; I could make ay own plans almost anytime afternext Sunday.(His letter may be in the next mall), Wisconsin has been such a comfortable"rut" that we were beginning to wonder whether we could be tempted by any reasonable bid elsewhere. I'd don't know how this will turn out, but it is the first of a number of pos- sibilities in several years that sounds attractive ehough to warrant put- ting your department and us to the trouble of more intimate discussions. We'll be talking about these things at Palo Alto, and soon. Thanks again for your warm note -- for writing 1t, and for what it says. Say hello to Dot. Sincerely, oe Joshua Lederberg
