Dear Joshua:
Vice-president Wellman has just informed me that President Spraul and President-elect Kerr reluctantly decided against your appointment. This is a critical time and many factors were involved, apparently expense was the over[?]-ending [?] one.
All of the staff members were shocked at the decision and terribly disappointed that we will not have you and Esther as colleagues. Under the circumstances we feel that it would be completely unfair to you to continue negotiations -- we have wasted more than enough of your time as it is.
