UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION DIVISION OF GENETICS BERKELEY 4, CALIFORNIA January 15, 1958. Dr. Joshua Lederberg, Dept. of Genetics, University of Wisconsin, Madison 6, Wisconsin Dear Joshua: The Chanceller has now approved the relocation of the Department of Genetics to the top floor of Mulford Hall (Forestry). I am enclosing a preliminary layout for the proposed microbial genetics laboratory. First, I should like to emphasize that the functions of the various rooms may be interchanged without materially affecting the estimated cost. The same is true of offices and laboratories. Stage 1 as outlined in the upper drawing is estimated to cost $145,000.00 and the complete laboratory $222,000.00. However, as you can well imagine, the laboratory will have to be completed in two stages. The most in sight at present is $100,000 for the first stage laboratory including equipment, which will mean that the second stage will require an additional $122,000.00. Cochrane Browne is of the opinion that a satisfactory laboratory can be built with the $100,000. However, it will require more knowledge of your operations than either of us possess. Vice President Wellman has recommended to the President (1) your appointment, (2) Esther's appointment, and (3) appropriation of funds for the first stage of the laboratory. Your appointment and the appropriation of funds for the first stage of the laboratory must be approved by the Regents and it is hoped that this approval may be obtained at their February or March meeting. Work on the laboratory can probably start within six weeks or two months after the funds have been appropriated, assuming that an offer to join our faculty has been made to you and you have accepted it. It is hoped that the laboratory will be ready for occupancy by September or October 1958. Funds for the completion of the laboratory will be requested in the University's 1959-60 Capital Outlay Program. It may be that actual construction will not get started before the Spring of 1%0. Dr. Lederberg.....page two In the event that the President and The Regents approve Vice President Wellman's recommendations and they are acceptable to you, we would like to have you visit the campus this coming Spring for a day or two in order to confer with our Office of Architects and Engineers regarding the details of the plans for the first stage of the laboratory. We would, of course, pay your transportation and subsistence expenses in connection with this visit. Regards to you and to Esther. Chairman of the Dept. JAIsw ec. Vice-President Wellman
