SCG July 23, 1975 Dr. Todd Wipke Department of Chemistry University of California Santa Cruz, California 95060 Dear Dr. Wipke, Thank you for sending me the material pertinent to your spplication for access to SUMEX. It has had an enthusiastic preliminary review here. For your and ite convenience, I think the Advisory Committee (address lebels enclosed) need and should get the material that is marked (©) on your list plus just abstract pages of ® « You might add a note to indicate whether full copies of these items are available on specific request by individual committee members. I will send a parallel note requesting a preliminary mail ballot. I will also indicate that the Advisory Committee should not be put off by the rather substantial aliquot of resources that you have indicated. This will probably have to be negotiated by the Executive Comittee after a further round of discussions with our staff. We believe that you may have underestimated the throughput capability of SUMEX; and we would have a problem meeting your presently stated requirements for file space, without getting some new funds for another disk drive. We hope you will soon be getting some experience on some of these points and we can continue the dialogue over the summer. We may decide to request an EARLY approval at a provisional lower consumption level, and continue negotiations for expansion in the light of your verified needs and of available resources. We are looking forward to a constructive cooperation; the matter will now be in the committees’ handa. Sincerely yours, Joshua Lederberg Principal Investigator ‘JIL/er Enclosure
