Todd Wipke Assistant Professor of Chemistry Director NATO Advanced Study Institute Princeton University Princeton, New Jersey 08540 Dear Dr. Wipke: First let me apologize for taking so long to reply to your letter of April 8, 1972 which included a cordial invitation to participate in an Advanced Study Institute next May. I simply have to put this down to administrative confusion, having been under the impression that one of my colleagues had replied to it during a period when I was absent. When I was questioned about whether I had already responded to this I realized that the loop was still open at least as far as the completion of my own obligation and good etiquette. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend myself, but I wonder if you would consider the suggestion of Dr. Dennis Smith in our department of Chemistry. He tells me that you may have met during the period of graduate study and you will no doubt have encoutered his name in a number of publications both from our group, and previously, that also deal with computer repre- sentation and manipulation of chemical information. Dr. Smith has played a central role in the development of our own program here and I am sure that he would be a worthy representative of our group and an articulate and effective contributor to your study institute. From our standpoint it would also be advantageous, from the standpoint of his own education, if he would join with you. _I realize that’ at this late date you may have already made other conflicting commitments that may make it difficult for you to respond to this suggestion but if the possibility is still open I hope that you give it your sympathetic consideration. Yours sincerely, Joshua Lederberg Professor of Genetics . JL:m£ LT. J. P. KENNEDY, JR. LABORATORIES FOR MOLECULAR MEDICINE, DEDICATED TO RESEARCH IN MENTAL RETARDATION MOLECULAR BIOLOGY .
