597 Dover Road Oceanside, L.I.,11572 March 18, 1971 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Prof. of Genetics, Stanford Univ. Stanford, Calif. Dear Dr. Lederberg, I am writing to you on behalf of the Rockville Center Conquest of Cancer Committee. We need your help. Our group was formed primarily to act as a catalyst to the voting public; our aim is to promote the passage of the Conquest of Cancer Act, and we are urging each and every citizen to make his voice heard during this critical campaign before the bill is defeated. If this Act is passed, there shall be established a@ sole authority set up to investigate cancer alone. This authority shall be named the National Cancer Authority, and it shall receive adequate resources of manpower, facilities and funds needed to do the job in accordance with the provisions of a coordinated national program plan. There exists certain areas of special promise, which must be aggressively pursued, and first on the list is the identification and study of the chemical, physical and other environmental factors that cause cancer, (food add- itives, air pollutants, etc). We write to you because we have learned of your inter- ests along these lines. We urge your support and weloome your recommendations as soon as possible. Time is of the essence since this proposal is set to appear before the Congress sometime in the latter month of April. A full scale crusade is going on now and we need every intérested party to do what he can with whomever he can to urge passage of the proposal, We anxiously await your response. Thank-you so much Sincerely, (Mrs.) Sally G. Shelowitz
