Dear Doctor Lederberg:

The students were heartbroken that you couldn't come this
Spring and they decided, therefore, to omit the subject in the
hopes that you would come in the Fall.

In the meantime, I guess you or someone sent me your
very interesting article on Health Care Costs Inflated by
‘Dollars without Doctors. I thought you might like to see the
article 1 did for the New York Times at their request not long
ago. I am quite sure, myself, that simply maintaining the exist-
ing system by which we deliver medical care services will never
solve the problem, so that in addition to the things that you
list I would list the experimentation and evaluation of different
ways of tackling the problem as high on the list. The quirk
of the problems as you pointed out is that they have been
putting in dollars, but have done nothing about the capacity to
deliver health services.
