Dear Friends:

Dr. Albert F. Blakeslee died at Northampton, Massachusetts, on
November 16, 1954. On the initiative of the Smith College Chapter
of the Society of Sigma Xi, this committee has undertaken to estab-
lish a science lecture fund as a memorial in his honor.

Throughout an active life, Dr. Blakeslee not only made important
contributions to scientific knowledge, but he succeeded with a rare
skill in sharing with his associates and students his experience and
his enthusiasm. He was tireless in his efforts to promote research,
to bring scientists into closer association and to make scientific in-
formation available to all. Following his retirement as Director of
the Department of Genetics of the Carnegie Institution of Washington at
Cold Spring Harbor, Dr. Blakeslee founded in 1942 the Smith College
Genetics Experiment Station, which he directed until his death. He
established the Four College Genetics Conference and brought to the
Connecticut Valley region many outstanding scientists. A science
lecture fund, therefore, would serve to continue the kind of work
which Dr. Blakeslee himself carried out in this area.

We invite you to contribute to the Albert F. Blakeslee Memorial
Fund. This invitation is being sent to many organizations, scientists,
associates and other friends of Dr. Blakeslee in the hope that suffi-
cient money will be obtained to endow a lectureship. This is the only
request which will be made, and we earnestly hope that you will con-
tribute to the fund.

Donations may be mailed in the enclosed envelope. Your check
should be made payable to Smith College, A. F. Blakeslee Fund. Con-
tributions are deductible for income tax purposes.
