Dear Professor Lederberg,

Thank you for your letter enquiring about the
outbreak of severe haemorrhagic disease in vervet
monkeys, written up in the Lancet on 25th November
1967. Whilst it is true that the Permanent Section
of Microbiological Standardisation wrote a brief report
shortly after the outbreak for the purposes of inform-
ing their membership, this report is so out of date
that we have ceased distribution,

I think it is important for you to refer to the
original authentic reports of the outbreak of this
disease, which is covered by the issue of "Deutsche
Medizinische Wochenschrift", dated 26th March 1968.
Although these reports are in German there are English
summaries at the back of the journal,

I am sorry to be so negative in this respect, but
the original interim report may now be misleading to you.
