Sead Caspersson, priceg and the article by Field on UV

We have had considerable difficulty in dealing with the organisms in
Ludox on account of precipitation of the Ludox and the immobilization of the
specimens. We, therefore, have to find better techniques for transfering
the specimens from Ludox to TVA or for supplementing the Ludox so that it can
be used directly. We promised to do this. He will test out the incorporation
of bacteria into polyviny! alcohol himself and we will send him additional
specimens including those from soil already prepared on quartz covered
glasses. It would be desirable to use a .35 mm covered glass on one side and
a thinner cover glass on the other to allow some latitude in the use of the lens.
Caspersson will also send us a mounting for registration of the specimen.

Caspersson also discussed the variation in the focus of the quartz lenses
and indicated that these were mainly things which we would have to measure for
ourselves. There is about a 4 micron excursion of the focus in the region from
eho to 3000m: for the 1.25 lens. He did not think we would really lose very
much by using the .85 lens.

Caspersson will be back in this country for a brief period the end of
November and will keep us informed about his itinerary. Otherwise he will
remain in Stockholm at least through the end of this year.

We discussed the possible use of the laser for raman spectroscopy with
the microscope. Caspersson was rather interested in this.

Gullberg wants to visit us.

wolochow and Chatingny should be urged to compare their cook lens
with ours.
