Philip Handler, former president of the National
Academy of Sciences and a trustee of The Rockefeller
University since 1968, died December 29 in Boston.

Internationally known for his biochemical research
on the nutritional causes of disease, Dr. Handler also

was recognized as a statesman of science and one of its
most eloquent spokesmen.

During almost 14 years as trustee of this Uni-
versity, Dr. Handler was an enthusiastic supporter, a
multi-talented counselor, and a warm colleague. On
behalf of the University community, I express deep
sorrow at his death and extend our sympathies to his
family.
