Conwy, WwW, THE ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY 1230 YORK AVENUE NEW YORK, NY 10021 June 19, 1979 JOSHUA LEDERBERG PRESIDENT Mr. William Conway General Director The New York Zoological Society Bronx Park Bronx, NY 10022 Dear Mr. Conway: By now you have, received a copy of my letter to Laurance Rockefeller concerning the Fairfield Osborn Memorial Lectures, and I would like to underscore my special appreciation for the partnership of The New York Zoological Society and The Conser- vation Foundation in this undertaking. The rotational respon- sibility for organizing the annual lecture seems to me the most effective means of managing our collective efforts aimed at ad- vancing the success and stature of the Osborn Lectures. Messrs. Richard Dana and Barry Dress of the University's staff have begun preliminary work to gather the various com- ponents of an invitation list for next November 12 when Dr. Russell Peterson, President of the National Audubon Society, will speak at The Rockefeller. I hope that your staff can soon compile a list of invitees connected with The New York Zoological Society as well as other sources of interested guests you might suggest. Within the next week, Mr. Dana will be in touch with your office concerning invitations and to in- quire about the most convenient way to keep you informed about further plans as they develop. I am particularly interested in your thoughts about pos- sible lecturers in the years ahead, the regular publication of each presentation and the: option of arranging a small confer- ence to extend dialogue on the issues raised by speakers. Please let me know your reactions to these points and any other ideas you may have for our shared sponsorship of the Osborn Lectures, Fs joo Lederberg
