Dear Dr. Lederberg::

Two years ago the Center for Bioethics of the Clinical
Research Institute of Montreal launched a series of
volumes on issues in bioethics. Each volume in this
series concentrated on a specific theme. Roughly half
of the authors for each volume come from Europe, the
other half from North America. All articles not
originally written in French are translated by us to
produce a series of French language volumes that serves
as a forum for an international discussion of ethical
issues in biomedicine.

We enclose information on the Center for Bioethics and
on the first three volumes of our series, Cahiers de

Bioéthique. ZZ

We would like to invite you to write for our fourth
volume, "Médecine et Expérimentation". This volume, as
indicated in the enclosed outline, will have a special
section offering the “considered spontaneous responses"
of Nobel prize winning scientists to the quite general
question we have raised about the ethical regulation of
biomedical research.
We invite you to write your "considered spontaneous
response" to this question for our fourth volume. You
may formulate your response in any fashion you choose.
We only ask that the response not exceed 1000 words.

If you are able to accept this invitation we would be
deeply grateful to receive your manuscript by January
30th, 1981. This would help us to prepare a French
translation, if necessary, in time to meet our deadline
and to afford you an opportunity to review the trans-
lation prior to publication.

We would also appreciate your calling us "collect" in
answer to this letter. This will speed up our subse-
quent planning.
