Kibbee at The City Uni- versity of New York, I am writing to you as one particularly well informed about higher education in the United States. Your familiarity with colleges and universities and their leadership requirements could be of great help. In short, I seek your personal wisdom and judgment in filling one of the most signifi- ~~ cant university posts in our country. The City University of New York is the third largest university in the nation, with over 172,000 full- and part-time students enrolled in 18 campuses. The University is composed of nine colleges of arts and sciences; seven community colleges; one technical college; a Graduate School and University Center; and an affiliated medical school. In addition, the University has numerous outreach programs; programs with the secondary schools of New York City; and extensive educational and training con- tracts with unions and private industry. The University has an annual operating budget of $640 million provided through tuition and public funds, and a faculty and staff of approximately 14,000, the majority of whom are unionized. The Board of Trustees of The City University of New York is looking for a man or woman of intellectual stature who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and administrative capa- . bilities in order to lead this large and complex system in the decade ahead.
