Cisneros Co-Director Chicano Education Project Western Service Systems, Inc. 1444 Stuart Street’ Denver, Colorado, 80204 Dear Mr. Cisneros: I have your letter of September 7 describing your efforts at improving educational opportunity for Chicano children in the Southwestern United States. Having moved fairly recently from Stanford University in Cali- fornia I have nothing but admiration for the progress already demonstrated by many students from this cultural background; and of course I realize that there is much more that needs to be done. I am not certain whether you have correctly identi- fied our institution and for that reason am enclosing a brochure that succinctly summarizes what we do. Asa biomedical research institute our connection with educa-~ tional policy is limited to the more advanced stages: which is not to disclaim responsibility for taking account of the aspirations and activities to which you are dedicat- ed. We would certainly give the most sympathetic considera- tion to Chicano candidates who were well-prepared for entry and advancement into scientific careers; and indeed I hope there would be more encouragement towards this career choice than was evident among the Chicano students whom I met at Stanford. If you could suggest the specific areas of cooperative interest that you might have in mind I would be happy to hear from you by telephone or to arrange a meeting. yours Since / IN y Joshua Lederberg erély, { Encl.
