ITAYUN 12" 1337 PHYSICIAN-IN-CHIEF 16 June 1987 Dr. Joshua Lederberg President The Rockefeller University Dear Josh: Thanks for your several notes. I thought I would just respond to the most immediate one concerning the Hospital search. I think it is essential that the Council give us a new charter and approve the make-up of the committee which we discussed (Breslow, Greengard, Kaiser, Kappas and Wiesel). Concerning the latter I would only raise the possibility that you might want to consider substituting Dr. Pfaff for either Dr. Wiesel or Dr. Greengard. This search will probably try to focus on a possible candidate in neurosciences and someone like Dr. Pfaff might be interested in joining the committee. He has not previously served on a Hospital search committee. Concerning Crystal, I think that he has indulged in some wishful thinking about what Gordon Douglas will come up with. I cannot imagine that Gordon would fail to support his own man in this particular situation. I think the Crystal matter is over and should be terminated gracefully, since it seems clear that what he would like in the way of resources will not be provided at The Rockefeller University. We have some breathing room now for a continued search before the next CRC application is due, but considering the extraordinary length of time it takes to find potential candidates and to agree upon an ultimate nominee for appointment here, I think we should begin this search promptly. Yours sincerely, AttallahfKappas, M.D.
