Dear Dr. Lederberg:

Recently the sponsors of the Exxon Donor Solvent
Coal Liquefaction Project dedicated the 250 ton per day
Exxon Coal Liquefaction Pilot Plant that will be a major

element in completing the integrated research and develop-
ment project.

Efforts are now fully underway to bring the plant
onstream early this spring. Over the next two and a half
years, it will demonstrate essential elements of the EDS
process on a large scale, under sustained conditions and
on a variety of different coals. Together with continuing
research and engineering work, operations of this pilot
plant are expected to provide data that would be the basis
for designing future commercial coal liquefaction plants.

We at ER&E are proud of our role in this important
project, involving government-industry participation on an
international level. To mark the occasion, we have pro-
duced two booklets. One deals with the significant aspects
of the project. The second contains remarks made at the
dedication by some of the major participants. In addition,

we have enclosed some recent ER&E technical publications on
EDS.
