Dear Mrs Edman

Nancy Novario just wrote me the sad news of
Jack's death. You may know that Jack was the closest
friend of my own youth; and except for the last 10
years had still managed some intermittent contact
after the War. I have thought a great deal about
Jack during these years, and was saddened by his
own anguish and difficulties during so much of that
time. In spite of all the problems that must also
have been transferred to your own and your children's
shoulders, I am sure that his death is a particular
loss; and I can hardly be of great help with these
consolations. I did want you to know how highly I

thought of Jack -- in his own style he was among the
most brilliant people I have ever met, and I learned
a great deal from him -- and that I just wanted to

share this memory with you.
