STANFORD UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS February 15, 1979 Joshua Lederberg President The Rockefeller University 1230 York Avenue New York, N.Y. 10021 Dear Josh: Thank you for your phone call. The fusion of bacterial protoplast and liposomes is mentioned in Chang and Stan's paper which will be appearing in MGG. They have tried the method but did not pursue it, since direct treatment of protoplasts with PEG gave better transformation frequency with plasmid DNA. The reference for bacterial protoplast and liposome fusion is: Ostro, M.J., Giacomoni, D., and Dray, S. Biophys. Biochem. Res. communications, 76: 836-842 (1977). I have taken care of the letter and strain request from Oxford. Best wishes to Marguerite, David and Annie, * fours: Hh a A.T.
