(I just saw PNAS July).
It's just a pity we don't have any really crisp and persuasive and well controlled experiments. It's awful to have to analyze week-old agar plates; and God knows what selective and metabolic circumstances.
Hot off the press -- Mellon and Hanawalt have pretty well corroborated the concept. Differential DNAse-I sensitivity would be a similar parameter (look at Stalder, Cell 20: 451 (1980); Weintraub Cell 42: 705 (1985) -- but I don't have in front of me.)
