1 [stamped, JAN 7 1977] Y. Hirota Dec. 30th, 1976 Professor J. Lederberg Department of Genetics Stanford University Medical Center Stanford, California 94304 U.S.A. Dear Joshua: As I have telephoned to you this September, I shall visit California at Santa Barbara on Jan. 2nd to Jan 8th of 1977, in order to attend the Gordon Conference on Bacterial Cell surface. Taking this opportunity, I would like to visit you very much. There is a little problem about the date and time of my visit you, and I would like to know, how I should be able to manage it. Because of my visit of U.S. this time is strictly regulated by the administration of Japanese Government which sponcered [sic] my visit of Santa Barbara. I am ordered by them to arrive Jan. 2nd, stay Santa Barbara, and leave US on Jan. 9th to come back Japan. No modification of this schedule is allowed to me. [END PAGE ONE] [BEGIN PAGE TWO] 2 Y. Hirota The Conference will over at Jan. 7th (Fri), noon. Under these circumstances, I am able to visit Stanford on Jan 8th (Sat) morning, or Jan 7th (Fri) late afternoon. I am worrying a case if you could not be in your office on these data and time, then it become difficult to see you there. If this is the case, I might skip the Conference a day to see you, althugh [sic] I would very much like to attend the whole Conference. I shall telephone you at your office from Santa Barbara regarding this matter. I feel very sorry to give you my tight schedule at this late, but I could not do it the sooner. Under the separate mail, I sent to you the 2nd version of a manuscript to P.N.A.S. (Matsuhashi et. al). Two Zerox [sic] copies are included. Please find it, and I would like to learn your opinion on it when I visit Stanford. Jack Strominger, Michio Matsuhashi, and me shall meet at the Gordon Conference to discuss about the manuscript. So that please keep it in your hands. [cut off digital scan, Thank you very much, and Sincerely yours, Yuki]
