DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY OCT 2 6 1965 FACULTY OF SCIENCE OSAKA UNIVERSITY NAKANOSHIMA, OSAKA, JAPAN October 23, 1965 Professor J. Lederberg Department of Genetics Medical Center Stanford University Palo Alto, California U.S.A. Dear Joshua sensei: Please excuse my long silence. Teday, I would like to write my recent status to you. Big changes have been occurred here in this year: Professor H. Kikkawa retired his professorship of Department of Biology, School of Science, University of Osaka where I have been a staff. Election of the new professor has been done many times but still not finally determined yet, and I was dropped from the candidates, even Professor Kikkawa has been supported on me. The policy of the department is that all the research position of the laboratory will be appointed by the newly elected professor, and the old staffs of the laboratory including myself were suggested to leave here within a certain period of time, ~ if he is not appointed by the new professor. It means that very few security has been left to continue my work at this department, and I am so tired on this environment. Fortunately, Dr. F. Jacob of Pasteur Institute gave me an opportunity to visit his laboratory, and I would like to go there for a while on the end of this month and wait the results from Osaka. Please give my best regards to Esther. With very best regards, [(ubemesi A irrla Yukinori Hirota
