Dear Dr. Lovett,

It looks as if our experiments on the coupling of B. subtilis
segments to pscl0Ol are bureaucratically too hazardous to be pursued
in the atmosphere of the Asilomar final report.

One way we might restart would be to use one of your newly
discovered Bacillus plasmids instead. And Frank Young is working
hard to produce a “disarmed" strain of B. subtilis. Could I ask you
to furnish what might be useful by way of strains and information
concerning your recent discoveries, You may be sure we will await the
publication of your own report on these agents before making public
reference to them ourselves,
