I have recently moved to U.C. Davis and since your letter was sent to my old address in Hawaii the delay was inevitable. Concerning Eagon's finding that B. natriegens has a very rapid growth rate, I have recently heard that Dr. George Hageman could not repeat this observation. When grown on a complex media (0.5% tryptone + 0.5% yeast extract, + 0.2% glycerol) many of the beneckeas have at 28°C a generation time of 28-40 minutes. On a minimal medium with 0.2% D-glucose, the generation time is 50-60 minutes. Since I don't think these generation times are particularly unusual, I wil]? not send strains at this time unless you specifically make a request. Dr. D. G. MacPhee at the Department of Genetics and Human Variation, La Trobe University, Bundoora, Victoria 3083, Australia, has recently requested several strains of B. natriegens to study DNA repair. I don't know if he has been able to repeat Eagon's observations and I suggest that you write to him. Enclosed is a set of our reprints dealing with marine bacteria. Should you still want strains, please let me know. Sincerely, AL , Pa a VI ae Paul Baumann eel ecm PB:emc Enclosures | Repent fo Ger, rang ‘di nvpynveg
