DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY WALTER REED ARMY INSTITUTE OF RESEARCH WALTER REED ARMY MEDICAL CENTER WASHINGTON, D.C. 20012 REPLY TO ATTENTION OF: June 25, 1973 Dr. J. Lederberg Dept. of Genetics Stanford Univ. Sch. of Med. Palo Alto, Calif. 94305 Dear Josh: I saw Gan at the ASM meeting and mentioned that I was intrigued enough by your comments on the Proteus OX strains to examine them for satellite bands or circles. We were unable to find any- thing even after fractionation of material on the light side, The other obvious possibility of phage involvement is a bit a blind alley; although the strains are inducible we haven't seen any plaques on any of the plating strains we used. I don't know of any way to establish transformation as a possibility; homology studies are unlikely to be of much significance. L£ OL I realize that negative results aren't very stimulating, but J would be very interested in any comments you might have or any suggestions. With best regards, L. 5S.
