February 21, 1958 Dr. U. Taubeneck Institut fur Mikrobiologie und Experimentelle Theraple Beuthenbergstr. 11 Jena, Germany Dear Dr. Taubeneck: Thank you very mich for your message of January 6th. Your technique is most ingenius and I would indeed appreciate the favor, which you offered, of receiving one of the glass matrices. I had in fact experimented briefly with the use of an electron microscope grid for such a purpose but found it to be quite unsatis- factory for obvious reasons. However it had not occurred to m to use a replica of the sort you indicate and I think that procedures should not be too difficult to develop which could furnish even smaller areas well marked ani conceivably even numbered. As a matter of fact, would it not be possible to obtain a reticule by photographic reduction which would have well marked and even previously numbered fields for your manipulation? There are, I know, photographic techniques for the preparation of spectro gratings which I think should be applicable for the production of a suitable matrix. It is easy to foresee a wide range of applicatitns for your simple and ingenius technique. Yours sincerely, Joshua Lederberg Professor of Medical Genetics JLfew
