THE ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY 1230 YORK AVENUE NEW YORK. NY 10021 January 26, 1987 JOSHUA LEDERBERG PRESIDENT Dr. M. B. Sahasrabudhe Emeritus Scientist 41 Saras Baug Sion-Trombay Road Deonar, Bombay 400 088 India Dear Dr. Sahasrabudhe: It was a pleasure to hear from you again and I ‘thank you very much for keeping me up-to-date with your activities since our last meeting in 1958. About your proposal in cancer diagnosis: the kind of clini- cal testing you have in mind is really quite out of the purview of The Rockefeller Institute. My suggestions for its further pursuit depend on whether you have in mind supervising the clini- cal protocols yourself or are trying to inspire other groups to do that. In either case it is important to know what publications or patents you may have that would allow sufficient disclosure to enable a critical judgement to be made about your proposal. There are then three avenues for further pursuit (forgive me for explaining the obvious perhaps there will be some small thing here that would be of new help to you):. 1) research hospitals devoted to cancer -- like the Sloan-Kettering Insti- tute. 2) The National Cancer Institute in the United States -- have you been in touch with any of the officials there? 3) Com- mercial pharmaceutical companies which would be more than eager to exploit your methods if they could be persuaded of their validity. You hardly need me for 1 or 2. With respect to 3: if you would care to also send me a C.V. and general personal bibliography, as well as the published technical background on your diagnostic methodology, there are two or three companies that I could. think of sending this to. I could give you the names of some others for your own further initiative. Dr. M. B. Sahasrabudhe January 26, 1987 -2- As I read your letter again I am little confused whether you think the next step is in animal models or directly in clinical material. For the former is it a matter of finding funding? As far as facilities at The Rockefeller Institute go, for the next two or three years we are really heavily over- booked. We are putting up a new research building but in the process have to demolish one of the smaller existing ones. So it is all we can do to find reasonable relocation for our own people during the interval. With very best wishes, Yours sincerely, ua Lederberg
