I think your discussion of Garrod's work is fair and correct. In particular I agree with your statement on page 10 of the manuscript that Garrod never quite voiced the intellectual leap from the anomaly provoked by the mutant gene to the positive function of its normal allele. Certainly when I was writing about Garrod in the early 1960's I would certainly have quoted any explicit statement on this if I had been able to find one.
