some hypotheses falsified:
in fact: Van Niel    Haagen-Smit encountered Ed quite independently of one another, and of Beadle's recruitment of Ed from Kogl's lab!
I am learning something of the academic politics of Stanford in 1944. (CV Taylor and Tressider and the Dept were in) a multiway rumpus! My suspicions (recollections?) of Ed having been nudged out in 1945 are verified by Van Niel!
