Memo from To: C.B. VanNiel JOSHUA LEDERBERG Nay a. x f 975 recollections of Ed Tatum I am sure that there are many things you would have to offer for this enterprise; probably answers to many questions that I am not even aware of. I did hope you could confirm ny suspicions that you would have been the person in Biology here to have been aware of Ed in '36 or so (from his work on Propionibacter nutrition) and call Beadle's attention to him when he was looking for a biochemist to work on the Drosophila hor- mone. Is that right? Can you recall when you first encountered Ed by name and in person? Did he correspond with you before he came to Stan- ford? Less critical (unless the answer is counter- intuitive) is just why Ed left Stanford in 45. Again, with fond greetings, PROFESSOR JOSHUA LEDERBERG Department of Genetics School of Medicine Stanford University Stanford, California 94305
