Es Snell. [stamped, NOV 15 1976] Dear Es: I guess you were a couple of years behind Ed Tatum as a graduate student at Wisconsin, but I can hardly think of anyone likely to be more knowledgeable about his early differentiation as a scientist. Anything you have to say -- and I am looking for critical perceptions, not just eulogies -- would be most welcome. I have just 2 specific questions at this time: a) How would you evaluate the historical signif. of the 1936 paper on thiamine in Propian [?] bacterium nutrition? B) Do you know the circumstances of Ed going to Kogl's lab in '36? Do you know what he worked on there? . . . a longer shot,: how he came to Beadle's attention?
